An old blog post on a “ Redneck Rocket Stove ” made out of cinder blocks prompted many to suggest that the cinder blocks would explode due to heat. Leon, of the blog Survival Common Sense, does a good job of refuting this notion in a blog post, “ Build a brick rocket stove: Is it safe to use concrete blocks?
” The short answer is that those concrete blocks are not going to explode. But if you want something permanent you should use fire bricks and fire clay as mortar so it won’t crack.
This of course begs the inquiry “Can I use concrete blocks for a fire pit?”
An answer is that concrete blocks should NEVER be used for firepits. They can explode and cause serious injury and/or death. Always use firebrick or cinderblock for fire pits. Thanks for contributing an answer to Home Improvement Stack Exchange!
One way to consider this is the images revealed that high-performance concrete explodes because of the same properties that make it strong : It has very few pores, and those pores are tiny. When heated, water locked up in the concrete moves away from the source of heat and vaporizes. Because the concrete is so dense and impermeable, the water and steam get stuck.
Can a cinder block hold up a car?
The weight of a car can’t be carried by a cinder block. And the weight of the truck is most definitely too much for the blocks. The cinder blocks can hold around 170 pounds of weight ; and cars, trucks, and shipping containers weigh way more than that.
When we were reading we ran into the query “How much force does it take to break a cinder block?”.
The specifications (ASTM C90) for hollow load bearing concrete masonry units require that the block has a net compressive strength of 1900 psi. Since a 8″ block is about 50% solid, it would take about 120,000 pounds to break it. The load you put on it in a building is much less because of a factor of safety. Why do cinder blocks have holes?

While we were writing we ran into the question “Why do different calibers of bullets have different stopping power?”.
Different firearms and calibers of bullets have unique stopping power and potential for penetration depending on their velocity and construction.
Is it safe to move a car on a block?
