These are determined by the needs of the architect, builder, and client. The most common size of drywall is 4 feet wide and 8 feet long. Since 1/2-inch thick sheets of 4- by 8-foot drywall tip the scales at 57 pounds, this size tends to be the biggest sheet that most do-it-yourselfers can carry and lift into place.
How thick should drywall be?
Requires mining and burning of fossil fuels. The chemical process needed to manufacture it produces greenhouse gasses. Not impact resistant. Disposal methods are tedious. When it degrades it has the potential to create hazardous gasses. Manufacturers have a history of price gouging and have settled lawsuits many times.
How do you measure drywall?
Measure the Wall. Using a tape measure, determine the width of the wall and cut the drywall sheet so it is about a quarter inch shorter than your measurement. What size drywall knives do you need?
The good thing is that drywall knives are not expensive. The 6-inch knife and the 4-inch knife are used for slopping the mud into place and for taping. What kind of knife do you use to tape drywall?

Drywall taping knives are cleaned with water and elbow grease. Allowing drywall mud or joint compound to harden on the knife will make it difficult to clean. It may impair its use until all the hardened mud is removed. It can also cause rust to form on the metal of the knife.
