The answer is usually YES!
As a general rule you can stain your current floor a darker color without issue and have good results (except if they type of wood isn’t conducive to dark stain). In some cases you may be able to apply a translucent glaze that can darken the color without a full sanding and refinishing job.
Can engineered wood flooring be sanded?
In most cases yes. It all depends on the thickness of the wear layer. It cant be thinner than 3mm. Even at 3mm, if the floor is lumpy, you risk sanding through to the ply substrate.
The answer is that there are some engineered hardwood floors that cannot be refinished because the layer of veneer is too thin. However, with most engineered hardwood floors, you should be able to refinish them 1-3x max. However, if your engineered floors are also hand scraped, like ours are, that adds in another layer of complication.
Another frequently asked question is “Can You sand and refinish engineered hard wood flooring?”.
You can definitely sand and stain engineered hardwood flooring to refinish it; however, there are only a few millimeters of actual hardwood, so you have to be really careful to not sand right through to the plywood.
Any handy homeowner can refinishtheir own hardwood floors. Before you begin your project, prepyour space with a microfiber dustmop and then a vacuum. One way to consider this is pre-finished hardwoods can be sanded and refinished. We do it all the time! Most of the pre-finished flooring has a bevel in between each board. That bevel can be sanded flat, if you choose. However, it requires additional sanding.
Flooring experts estimate that hardwood floors can be sanded for refinishing up to 10 times, depending on the thoroughness of the sanding and the level of wear and tear on the floor. Situations differ, but you may not be able to refinish your hardwood floor more than 10 times. Safety Tip: Store and dispose of oil-soaked rags properly.
Once engineered wood flooring has been sanded and refinished, its usually much flatter than previously, meaning the subsequent sandings don’t need to take as much off. 6mm Engineered wood flooring can be sanded 3 times, whereas 3mm engineered flooring only once. The skill of the person sanding the floor is also a factor.
